Doors, flooring, skirting and architrave are usually the last of the joinery services on a job, the second fix that goes in at the end of the carpentry. That makes them the stage that shows: a door hung slightly out of square, or skirting that stops short of an architrave, is the kind of thing that gets noticed for years afterwards. It is also work that stands on its own. A single sticking door, a room of tired skirting, or a hallway due for new flooring do not need a renovation attached to them to be worth doing properly.

Wood and engineered flooring behave differently once they are down. Engineered boards move less with changes in humidity and temperature, which matters over underfloor heating or in a kitchen, while solid wood can be sanded and refinished more times over its life. Skirting and architrave carry their own version of the same problem: profiles vary between an older house and a newer one, and matching what is already there properly means seeing it in person rather than guessing from a photo. That is one of the reasons every job here starts with a site visit rather than a quote over the phone.

Carpentry and joinery of this kind is priced on what the room actually needs: how much has to come out first, how many doors or metres of skirting are involved, and how much has to be scribed around fireplaces, alcoves or existing features. That varies enough between two houses on the same street that a number given before a visit would not survive contact with the job. A written quote follows the visit, not the other way round.
