Timber Cladding: What to Know Before You Book
A wood cladding installation changes more than the look of a wall, so what is behind the boards matters as much as the boards themselves. The state of the wall is checked at the site visit before anything is priced.
Cladding installation on an older wall usually starts by taking off whatever is there now, whether that is old render, old boards or nothing at all, and checking the state of the brick or blockwork underneath. A wall that has been damp for years may need more work before the boards go up than a newer one, which is one of the reasons a firm price only follows a visit.
Planning rules vary by property and by area, and permitted development allowances are not the same on every house, so a specific question about what is allowed on a particular wall is answered at the visit rather than guessed at here.
Softwood cladding generally needs treating or re-oiling every few years to hold its colour, while some hardwoods are left to weather to grey with very little upkeep. Which suits a given job depends on the look wanted and how much maintenance the owner is happy to take on, and that is worked through at the design stage rather than assumed.
