What skirting and architrave fitting involves
Skirting board fitting sits along the bottom of a wall and takes the daily knocks a decorated wall cannot. Architrave does the same job around a door opening, covering the gap between the frame and the plaster. Both are cut to length, mitred at the corners and scribed where a wall is not quite square, then filled and sanded, left ready for your decorator. It is standalone work on its own, and it is also the last stage of a refurb, fitted once the floors are down and the doors are hung.

More about skirting and architrave
Skirting and architrave are decorative rather than structural, but the join they cover is one of the first places a room looks unfinished when it is missing or damaged. Skirting runs along the bottom of a wall to protect it from vacuum cleaners, chair legs and the general knocks a decorated wall cannot take. Architrave does the equivalent job around a door frame, hiding the rough gap between the frame and the plaster. Get either wrong, the wrong profile, the wrong height, a poorly filled joint, and it shows the moment the light hits it.
Material choice depends on the room and the finish. A painted finish and a stained or oiled finish call for different boards, and we advise on the material on the site visit, before you commit to anything.
Skirting and architrave often does not need planning permission, but check with your council if you are unsure. What affects the price is the number of rooms, the number of corners and doorways, and how square the walls actually are: an older property with slightly out-of-true walls is a different job to scribe neatly than a new-build box room, which is exactly why we price after a visit rather than over the phone.

Usually, yes. We measure the existing profile and height on the site visit and match it as closely as the timber merchants can supply, or agree a new profile with you if you are changing the look throughout.
Do I need to redecorate after new skirting is fitted?
The boards are filled and sanded, left ready for your decorator, but the painting itself is not part of the carpentry.
Will fitting new skirting damage my walls or floors?
Floors and doorways are protected before any cutting starts. Removing old skirting can mark a wall that was painted around it, and we will tell you on the site visit if that looks likely in your case.
Can you fit skirting and architrave I have already bought?
