Solid wood flooring is one board of timber, floor to face. It looks and feels like nothing else, and because there is no wear layer, it can be sanded back and refinished rather than replaced. The trade-off is movement: solid wood expands and contracts with the season, so it needs a stable subfloor and room to move at the edges, and is not usually the right choice over underfloor heating.
Engineered wood flooring fitting is different: the board is a real timber wear layer bonded to a plywood base built in layers to resist the movement solid wood is prone to. That makes it the more forgiving option over underfloor heating, over a floor that is not perfectly flat, or in a room where humidity varies through the year.

What's the difference between solid wood and engineered wood flooring?
Solid wood is one piece of timber floor to face and can be refinished many times over its life. Engineered wood flooring fitting uses a real timber wear layer over a stable plywood base, which copes better with underfloor heating and a subfloor that is not perfectly flat. Both are genuine wood floors, just built differently underneath.
Can engineered wood flooring go over underfloor heating?
