Fencing, garden gates and pergolas are three different jobs that are usually asked for together: a boundary that needs replacing, a gate to match it, and a pergola to give a seating area some shape and shade. All three get built the same way here: decent timber, posts set properly into the ground, and the site left as tidy as it was found. Fencing suits a boundary that has rotted, blown down or never been finished properly, and close-board fencing is the style built most often. A matching driveway or pedestrian gate, arched or square-topped and oak-stained to finish, closes it off, and a pergola works well over a patio, a hot tub, or a spot that needs a bit of shade in summer.

Fencing is normally priced on length and ground condition. A gate or a pergola is priced on the design agreed with you. None of that can be judged honestly without seeing the site, so every quote follows a visit rather than a phone call.

Most garden fences, gates and pergolas fall under what is called permitted development and do not need planning permission, but height limits apply, especially at the front of a property or next to a road, and the rules can be tighter in a conservation area. It is worth checking before anything is ordered, and it is one of the things covered at the site visit rather than left to guesswork.
A fencing installation lasts as long as the ground and the fixings allow it to. Most failures start at the bottom of the post, where damp sits against untreated or poorly protected timber, or where a post was never set deep enough for the height of panel it is holding up. The same applies to a gate: a well-built gate hung on posts that move will drop and stick before too long, whatever the gate itself is made of.
A pergola is more of a design decision than a boundary is. Where it goes, which way it faces, and what it sits over, whether that is a patio, a hot tub or a stretch of decking, all change what it needs to do. Garden gates, fencing and gates together, and pergolas are usually asked about at the same time because they are all part of finishing a garden off properly, and building them as one job rather than three separate ones keeps the materials and the finish consistent.

Do I need planning permission for a garden fence or gate?
Most garden fences and gates do not need planning permission, but there are height limits, particularly near a road or in a conservation area. It is checked as part of the site visit before anything is ordered.
How long does a pergola installation take?
It depends on the size and design agreed with you. A written quote sets out the timescale for your job once the site visit and design are done.
Who is responsible for a boundary fence, us or the neighbour?
That is between you and your neighbour to agree. We build to the line you confirm at the site visit and will not start until it is settled.
Can you build a fence, gate and pergola as one job?
Yes. Fencing and gates are usually built together so they match, and a pergola can be added to the same visit and quote if you want all three done at once.
