What a fitted wardrobe is
Built in, not bought in a box
A fitted wardrobe is built into the room it stands in rather than dropped into it: the carcass is made to the actual width, height and any slope in the ceiling or step in the wall, so there is no gap at the top and no wasted inch beside it. It suits an awkward alcove, a sloped loft eave, or a room where a standard flatpack size would leave dead space either side. Doors, materials and layout are agreed with you before anything is cut, and built on site rather than swapped in from a catalogue.

More about fitted wardrobes
A fitted wardrobe makes use of the space a freestanding one leaves empty. Where a freestanding wardrobe has to be a standard width and depth to be sold in a shop, a built in wardrobe is made to the room: the last few inches beside a chimney breast, the low corner under a sloped loft ceiling, or the run above a bed that would otherwise sit empty.
What changes the price is mostly what changes the amount of carpentry: the number of doors, the internal fittings such as hanging rail, shelving and drawers, and how much of the carcass has to be built to fit an awkward wall or ceiling rather than a straight one. Materials matter too, which is why they are agreed with you before the work starts rather than substituted part way through.
Most problems with a fitted wardrobe trace back to the survey rather than the build: a measurement taken carelessly, or a wall assumed to be straight when it isn't. That is the reason for measuring in person before anything is designed, and for sketching the layout before any wood is cut, rather than working from a phone call and a rough guess.

Can you build a wardrobe into an awkward alcove or a sloped ceiling?
Yes. That is where a fitted wardrobe earns its keep: it is built to the actual shape of the room, slope and all, rather than to a standard flatpack size.
Do you build the wardrobe off site or on site?
On site. The carcass and doors are built and fitted in the room itself, so they are made to its actual measurements rather than assembled from stock panels.
What happens if something isn't right after you have finished?
Alex comes back and puts it right.
Do I need planning permission for a fitted wardrobe in a loft or eaves space?
Generally not. Fitting a wardrobe into an existing room or loft space is decorative work, not structural, so it does not usually need planning permission or building control. Get in touch and we will tell you if your job is the exception.
